The Marion SWCD cooperates with several watershed councils within its boundaries. Watershed councils are locally organized groups that are formed on an individual watershed basis at the request of the local community. They are authorized by a state statute but are not certified through the Secretary of State. The councils can, however, be certified by local governments. Council members serve voluntarily without pay and councils may consist of any number of voting members. There are no land ownership-management requirements to serve on a council and there is no minimum age to be a member.
