Restoration
Projects
Willamette Mission State Park riparian
buffer education project - In March 1999, over 250 volunteers from the
region gathered on this site to plant several thousand trees, shrubs and
flowers. The goals of the project were to help restore the health of the
Willamette River Basin and provide a basis for public education.
A variety of restoration techniques are demonstrated in twelve individual
plots, and they range from forest plantings to wildflower meadows.
The project is now established as an educational display area for different
planting styles and native vegetation types.
 |
 |
| These photos
show the "before & after" at the project site in 2002. Weed control
is a big part of the maintenance of a riparian buffer planting. |
|
Marion SWCD staff helped urban landowners in Salem
with a stream restoration project in early 2003. The stream was overgrown
and choked out with invasive non-native plants, but the landowners
diligently attacked the weeds and then replanted with native riparian vegetation.
 |
 |
| Erosion control
was a critical part of this restoration project. After the weed removal,
erosion control blankets and straw wattles were installed to help stabilize
the banks of the creek while the new vegetation got established. |
