--Water Quality Volunteers Needed--
The Marion Soil and Water Conservation District has an ongoing Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program that began in 2002 in partnership with the Pudding River Watershed Council and Marion County Planning Department. Volunteers and participation from the Oregon Garden, the City of Silverton and the City of Woodburn have allowed us to gather base-line water quality data at many sites in the basin. Additional volunteers are needed to maintain existing sites and establish new sites.  All testing is done on a voluntary basis with the cooperation of local landowners and is not intended for regulatory use.

The program works to locate and identify problem areas where voluntary restoration efforts with local landowners are needed and to share information about the quality of local streams with the community. Volunteers conduct monthly tests for turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature and E. coli bacteria levels.  E. coli are bacteria that indicate the presence of human or animal waste in a stream and associated potentially harmful pathogenic bacteria. From the results of our monitoring data so far, we have seen that summer temperatures, low dissolved oxygen levels and potentially elevated bacteria levels are a concern in some local waterways.  Residents interested in finding out more about this program or volunteering to test their local streams can call Scott Eden at (503) 399-5741 x 118 or email scott.eden@or.nacdnet.net.
