Brazilian Elodea

Egeria densa

Plant Description

Long-stemmed submerged perennial with non-toothed leaves (to the naked eye) in whorls of 4-6 and small, white, 3-petalled emergent flowers. Can top out and form mats on the surface. Blooms in summer. Found in slow moving water up to 30 feet deep.

Distribution Found in side channels and on the banks of the Willamette River.
Control Clean fragments from boats, motors, and trailers to prevent spread. Small areas can be cleared by hand-pulling.
Disposal Methods Remove all plant fragments from the water.
Reproduction and Spread Spreads rapidly by fragmentation.
Introduced Native to South America, introduced to US in 1893.
Look Alikes Elodea canadensis, Elodea nuttallii, Hydrilla
Impact Clogs Waterways, impedes recreation, outcompetes native species, reduces fish habitat and alters water quality.
