Mahonia aquifolium

Plant Description

Attractive shrub with shiny green, prickly, holly-like leaves and dark blue edible (but very tart) berries. Sunny yellow flowers attract pollinators in spring. Some of the foliage turns bright red in winter. Tolerant of drought, wet, sun, and shade. This is the state flower of Oregon. Birds eat the berries and the roots have medicinal properties.
