Cascade Oregon Grape

Mahonia nervosa

Plant Description

Low growing, rhizomatous evergreen shrub with prickly leaves, up to 2 ft tall with yellow flowers in early spring to early summer. Produces edible (but tart) blue berries. Tolerant of moisture, drought, and shade. Provides food and cover for birds. Some of the foliage turns bright red or purple in winter. Makes a good groundcover for dry shade.
