An Associate Director position is a non-paid volunteer who may be appointed by official action to the Marion Soil and Water Conservation District’s Board of Directors. An Associate Director does not have the power to make motions or vote on Board decisions, but they may participate or contribute their knowledge or expertise at meetings and volunteer at activities or events associated with the District.
Service as an Associate Director allows individuals to be involved who may otherwise have a limited amount of time to commit or serve on a board, or who do not qualify to serve as At Large or Zone Directors. It can also be good training for those interested in eventually wanting to run for an elected position. The term of this position is normally for two years but the Board of Directors may appoint a person at any monthly board meeting during the calendar year. Then a person may be reappointed in January of every odd year to continue serving for a two-year term.
Any individual who is appointed to serve as an associate director is asked to attend at least one board meeting each month, though there may also attend meetings of committees, watershed councils, or other groups or organizations. Board meetings are usually held in the evening and the total time commitment is approximately 2 to 4 hours each month excluding time spent in preparation for the meetings.
