Beargrass

Xerophyllum tenax

Plant Description

A showy perennial in the lily family that grows from a woody rhizome. Leaves are thin and grass-like, growing to ~2 .6 feet long. Flower stems can reach to almost 6 feet in height. Elegant clusters of white or green flowers in an upside-down vase shape reminds one staff member of handblown glass. Blooms attract a variety of beneficial insects in spring and early summer. Leaves of beargrass are prized in traditional basketry.

This plant frequently grows in montane meadows and steep slopes, and can be difficult to transplant.
