Bromus carinatus
California brome is a cool-season perennial bunchgrass native to western North America, occurring in habitats ranging from open woodlands and prairies to disturbed sites and roadsides. It forms loose, upright clumps of bright green foliage and produces graceful, nodding panicles that mature to shades of tan and brown through the summer. Adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, it establishes quickly and is frequently used in restoration work for erosion control, habitat enhancement, and re-vegetation of degraded areas. California brome provides forage for wildlife and livestock, while also supporting insect communities associated with native grasslands.
