Water Birch

Plant Description

Water birch is found mostly east of the Cascades with scattered individuals in wet areas of the Willamette Valley. An attractive small,  short-lived (to 60 years) tree that prefers wet soils and full sun to part shade. Water birch turns bright yellow in autumn, with shiny bark that provides winter interest. It also provides habitat for sapsuckers, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Tolerates wet soils and occasional inundation.
