Black Hawthorn

Size: bareroot

Crataegus douglasii

Black hawthorn is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to western North America. It typically grows along streams, forest edges, and moist open areas, where it help to stabilize soils. The plant produces clusters of small, white flowers in late spring, followed by dark purple to black pomes in late summer that provide food for birds and small mammals. Its dense structure and impressive, up to 2″ long thorns offer excellent wildlife cover, while its adaptability to moist, well-drained soils makes it a valuable species for riparian restoration.
