Water Birch

Size: 1 gallon

Betula occidentalis

Water birch is found mostly east of the Cascades with scattered individuals in wet areas of the Willamette Valley. An attractive small,  short-lived (to 60 years) tree that prefers wet soils and full sun to part shade. Water birch turns bright yellow in autumn, with shiny attractive bark that stands out in winter. It provides habitat for sapsuckers, hummingbirds, and butterflies, and tolerates wet soils and occasional inundation.
